Transfer Cases
A transfer case is a part of a four-wheel drive system found in four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive vehicles. The transfer case receives power from the transmission and sends it to both the front and rear axles. This can be done with a set of gears, but many transfer cases manufactured today are chain driven. The transfer case is connected to the transmission and to the front and rear axles by means of drive shafts.
Four-Wheel Drive Transmission
A four-wheel (4x4) drive vehicle has differential gears, both front and rear axles, and a transfer case attached to the transmission. Four-wheel drive vehicles demand maintenance on the transfer case, front differentials, rear differentials, and transmission fluids.
Transmissions
The transmission is connected to key parts of your vehicle and needs to be working properly for your safety. Transmission services include replacing filters and draining fluids to prevent transmission damage. Typical transmission issues that may lead to repair may include shifting issues, slipping, stalling, fluid leaking, and the service light turning on.
Differentials
The differential transfers the engine power to the wheels. One important function of the differential is to pass on power to the wheels while allowing them to rotate at different speeds – thus the name differential. When turning, the outer wheels travel a larger distance than the inner wheels do (also the front wheels travel a longer distance than the rear wheels). This means that all four wheels travel at different speeds during a turn and this is where the differential comes in to help. To make sure your vehicle’s differentials are working properly, have them checked regularly. We provide fluid maintenance, leak repair, gasket reseal, and replacement services.
Belts
A fan belt, also known as a drive belt, is a belt connecting your car’s engine to the front mounted accessories. The drive belt rotates the water pump and engine fan. This keeps a cool environment for the engine and its components. We offer inspection and replacement for Motor Mounts and CV Joint/Axles, Axle Shaft Seal Replacement, and Drive Shaft Services.
Motor Mounts
Motor Mounts play a vital part in the safety of your vehicle. There are three or four, depending on the vehicle, strategically placed surrounding the engine attached with steel brackets. They are made of rubber to buffer the noise of the engine, as well as limit any vibrations from the running motor. Excessive shaking or vibration when your engine is running is a sign that the motor mounts may need replacement.
CV Joint/Axles
CV Joints allow front-wheel, all-wheel, as well as some rear-wheel drive vehicles to utilize different suspensions while on the same axle between the wheels. They contain a flexible joint that is heavily greased and permits the vehicle’s axle to adjust to various road conditions. CV joints eventually wear out due to constant stress. Two signs that your CV Joints or axle may require repair are:
- Clicking/Ticking noises when turning the wheel while driving
- Grease on tire edge
- Excessive shaking/vibration felt in steering wheel while driving
Driveline
A driveline is a part of your motor vehicle that connects the engine and the transmission to the wheel axles. The driveline consists of the parts of the powertrain less the engine and transmission. Failure of the driveline means that the car would not move since energy cannot be transmitted from the engine to the wheel axles. Therefore, make sure that your car’s driveline is regularly inspected and serviced.
